A Theoretical Study of the Place of Maqāṣidī Exegesis in the Field of Exegesis

Abstract

Maqāṣidī exegesis is a contemporary method of interpreting the Qur’an that emphasizes uncovering the higher objectives (maqāṣid) of the text. The emergence of this method is driven by the need to present an understanding of Islam that goes beyond literal readings and engages in dialogue between text and context to generate public benefit (maṣlaḥah). This article aims to systematically examine the position of maqāṣidī exegesis within the broader field of Qur’anic studies, by outlining its definition, formal and material objects, urgency, and its interrelation with other exegetical methods.The study shows that maqāṣidī exegesis occupies an important place in the treasury of Qur’anic interpretation. It serves as an approach that complements classical exegetical methods by giving greater attention to the purposes, wisdoms, and benefits embedded in the Qur’an. Thus, maqāṣidī exegesis contributes significantly to bridging textual and contextual approaches, while enriching the development of Qur’anic studies in the contemporary era.
